Displaced Afghan Children Express Themselves Through Uplift’s Art Program

Baseera, 13, fled Afghanistan with her family last year and started attending one of Uplift’s schools for refugee children in Pakistan.

An aspiring artist, she immediately wanted to get involved in the art program at her school. Baseera, along with several other girls in her class, prepared for 3 months to show their art at Uplift’s exhibition—an event put on by Uplift’s local team in Pakistan to encourage students to enhance their skills and develop confidence as artists.

“Today, in this exhibition, I am showing one picture, which depicts the passing [of] time in today’s world,” Baseera says.

Art classes are a great way for children affected by the uncertainty of war and displacement to express themselves.

“It felt so bad to leave my home, but Afghan girls are helpless and don’t have security there.”

Like so many other children who have been forced to leave their homes, Baseera hopes for a future where there is peace and security in Afghanistan for women and girls.
