Empowering Female Entrepreneurs in Afghanistan

Through Uplift’s micro-grant program, we partner with local non-profit organizations in Afghanistan aimed at empowering women to be financially independent.

One of our partner organizations, Hope for Afghan Women, provides safe spaces for women to train and prepare for self-employment. Training includes a step-by-step breakdown of the benefits, risks, and responsibilities of self-employment, the process of making a profit, how to select the best merchandise and locations to sell, how to identify customers, and how to prepare for free market competition. The goal is for every woman to have the knowledge and training necessary to receive the maximum benefits of self-employment.

After training, participants are given wooden carts so they can own and operate their own merchandise stands—generating a sustainable source of income for themselves and their families.

The majority of our women entrepreneurs have been able to maintain a steady profit of around 180-650 AFN per day since the carts were first distributed in early October.
